Founded in 2011 by Suze Allen, AJ Baker and Lee Brady, 3Girls Theatre Company has a singular mission: to put women’s work on stage where it belongs. The founders — all playwrights — were inspired by their desire to retain control over their own work and challenge the theatre establishment’s acceptance of a status quo dominated by the male perspective. It makes no sense that, as recently as 2008, only 12.9% of the plays produced by the mainstream American theatre were written by women. 3GT wants to help make this kind of imbalance a thing of the past.
3GT is a playwright-driven company; our intention is to stage and support new works written by our Resident and Associate Playwrights, rather than works that have already had mainstream production. To make this happen, we’ll be producing development readings, staged readings and full productions by our women playwrights, culminating in our annual Celebration of Women’s History Month Festival each March. Our mission also includes teaching other playwrights (through our Theatre Lab workshops) and, most importantly, nurturing the voices of young women in our Go Girl! Theatre Project. All of these components add up to our artistic vision: to create an enduring, collaborative Company where women’s voices of all ages will be heard, loud and clear.
