As part of our mission to support women and girls in theatre, 3GT is proud to sponsor a youth outreach program, GirlWrights: A Playwriting Lab for Young Women. GirlWrights gives voice to young women (8-18) who might otherwise not be heard by giving them the opportunity to create plays that represent their everyday issues, their dreams and their own brand of great entertaining theatre. The program will provide education and outreach to the female playwrights of tomorrow, particularly girls from lower socio-economic households and those in at-risk or compromised situations. Channeling and guiding the restless energy of teenage girls into art is a proven (and potent) antidote to other, less positive inner city alternatives. 3Girls Theatre aims to make this kind of constructive creativity possible to our students.
Girls will be recruited primarily from Bay Area public schools. We intend GirlWrights to be an after school/ summer program during which these young women will write, cast, rehearse and stage plays under the aegis of Suze Allen, 3GT’s Director of Education, 3GT’s artistic staff and other visiting artists. 3GT will produce the result as a GirlWright showcase, where the community will have the chance to applaud – and enjoy! –the creative efforts of our talented students. Members of our first 2012 Go Girl Theatre! student class will also be invited to join us as apprentices during our Celebration of Women’s History Month Festival in March 2013.
If you, or a girl you know, would like to become a participant in the GirlWrights program, please contact our Director of Education, Suze Allen. If you are an angel who wants to help make this program happen through your financial support or sponsorship, please contact our Executive Director, AJ Baker. We want to hear from you!
