3GT’s 7th Annual New Works Festival
Bubble, Bubble, Toil & Trouble: SF in 2018
Are things as unnatural here in 2018 as they are in the Scottish play? Is the toil and trouble of the current political climate boiling up under a witches’ curse? What bubbles will pop and will artists do that popping.
This year’s New Works Festival will take place from July 23 to August 5, 2018, at one of San Francisco’s most innovative theatre spaces, Z Below. Since 2012, this free, annual event has featured new work by women playwrights from both 3GT resident playwrights and the wider Bay Area community. We are passionate about engaging the Bay’s diverse multigendered, multicultural audiences, and increasing their access to women’s stories and experiences. With national attention focused on the need to hear women’s voices across the cultural and political spectrum, 3GT’s mission could not be more relevant.
Each year, the Festival showcases outstanding work from both our core 3GT projects and our special outreach programs. 2018’s theme will give local theatre artists and audience members a chance to explore our community’s “bubble” from as many perspectives as possible, and we’re excited to see what happens! Along with finalist readings from our Salon Series development program, the 2018 Festival calendar includes ongoing favorites “Best of LezWrites!” (open submission, humorous takes on the theme written/performed by LBTQ writers); ReproRights (open submission, short themerelated plays inspired by women’s reproductive rights, in collaboration with ReproRights Theater and NARAL); and GirlWrights (monologues by teenage girls in our summer writing workshop, in partnership with BayviewHunters’ Point Foundation). This year we’ve also added two new programs: “Bursting the Bubble” (open submission, an evening of curated 10minute play readings) and “3GT Innovators Night” (readings of 3 experimental works created by participants in our 3GT Innovators Project, sponsored by the Kenneth Rainin Foundation). The schedule also includes “NotSoLate Nite with 3GT,” our opening night kickoff talk show; and a “Town Hall” panel, in partnership with the SF Dramatists Guild. We expect to offer at least one writing workshop (TBD) at the venue in the days prior to opening night.
